Our Town Doesn’t Run on “Thanks.” It runs on our Volunteers. And we need more help! There are so many of us who are already involved, but if you are new to town, or a seasonal business or employee that reaps the benefit of living and working in Cooper Landing, there are many organizations, events and activities held that need help throughout the year. Or maybe you’ve volunteered in the past and had to take a break. Please participate again! Attached is the list of our local organizations that all run on volunteers, and what they contribute to our community. Take a look, pick your favorite (or two) and reach out to see how you can contribute. Watch the Crier for announcements and opportunities from them too. Please folks, if you’re not already, Help Out! Cooper Landing residents and visitors, please consider including the following concepts in your STIP comments:n “Please include funding in the 2024-2027 STIP for the existing Sterling Highway MP 45-56.”n

- The existing Sterling Highway MP 45-56 was last resurfaced in 2013 and remains the primary artery to the western and southern Kenai Peninsula and will do so until at least 2031 when the new alignment will be ready for traffic. It is due for improvements and maintenance.
- The Sterling Highway MP 45-56 is an impediment to safe travel for vehicles as well as bicyclists and pedestrians because of:
- n
- Narrow shoulders
- Steep or non-existent ditches
- Poor line of site on curves
- Sloughing bluffs with mud slides that block the road

- The DOT website for Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Project states:
- n
- “…the highway from MP 45 to 60 is the only portion of the highway that still has tight curves and no shoulders—relics of its original construction in 1950.”
- “For many years, DOT&PF has recognized that the Sterling Highway needs improvement.”
n
n
- The Sterling Highway MP 45-56 in its current state obstructs local economic development, historical and cultural preservation, fails to protect habitat, and impedes access to state and federal assets such as the Resurrection Pass Trail.
- The Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Project to re-align the Sterling Highway will not eliminate the limitations of the existing road nor all traffic on the “town road” and therefore the next maintenance done on the existing Sterling Highway MP 45-56 should include planning for, and possibly development of, a pathway for bicycles and pedestrians. That maintenance cannot wait another four years. It must begin in this funding cycle.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Community Assistance Program (CAP) 2023/2024 submissions are due to the Cooper Landing Community Club by September 10th. We ask that our local community organization liaisons to please submit their requested amounts via email to officers@cooperlandingcommunityclub.com. Requests need to include the amount, what the donation will cover, and the contact information for the organization making the request. The CAP funds must be used for a public purpose, and applicants must demonstrate that the project or program is publicly available to every person in the community.We must have these submissions to review and vote on at our September meeting in order to be compliant with the program. Need Volunteers for Tree Removal and Lawn Maintenance

The Cooper Landing Community Club is looking for some wonderful volunteers to remove trees on the CLCC property September 6th through the 13th. The trees are located directly behind where our hosts park their trailer. During that time the trailer will be removed and easy access is available. We are also in search of someone who will mow the lawn at Cecil Rhodes Park, on the corner of Bean Creek Road and Sterling Hwy. (Where our Welcome to Cooper Landing Sign is).
