Public input requested on proposed cabin fee changes for Chugach National Forest

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – May 23, 2024 – The Chugach National Forest is seeking public input on proposed changes to recreation fees at various recreation sites throughout the forest. The proposal includes changes in the fee structure at 25 existing cabins and would establish fees for two new cabins currently planned for construction. The public comment period is open May 23, 2025, through July 21, 2025.

“Cabin fees allow us to consistently provide the highest quality recreational opportunities to the public,” said Jenn Youngblood, Forest Supervisor of the Chugach National Forest. “This proposed fee change – the first since 2015 – will allow us to continue to provide opportunity for our visitors to enjoy the wonderful experiences the Chugach is known for.”

Visit the Chugach National Forest website to view a table of the proposed fee changes.

  • allall sites are available on recreation.gov with an additional reservation fee of $8

The public is invited to review and comment on the proposed recreation fee changes. To ensure that your comments are considered, please send your comments to Chugach National Forest, Attention: Jesse Labenski, 33599 Ranger Station Spur, Seward, Alaska, 99664.  Comments may also be emailed to jesse.labenski@usda.gov or provided online at https://arcg.is/0LSzWv2.

Oral comments may also be submitted at any Chugach National Forest office during normal business hours.  Please visit our website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r10/chugach for address, hours, and phone numbers of the location nearest you.

Once public involvement is complete, these recreation fee changes will be reviewed by the Alaska Region Fee Board. The Fee Board will submit their recommendation to the Regional Forester for a final decision.

In 2004, Congress passed the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (REA) which allows the Forest Service to retain at least 80% of the money collected at recreation sites and use these funds locally to operate, maintain, and improve these sites. Revenue collected through recreation fees helps the forest improve infrastructure at recreation sites and fund additional recreation staff during the season of operation. Recreation fees help provide quality recreation opportunities that meet the modern expectations of visitors and create a more financially sustainable recreation program for future generations.
