SALMON COOKOFF 2025 AFTERSPLASH!
The 2025 Salmon Cookoff on Sunday was a sensational success with even more culinary creativity and excitement than ever! This iconic event has been resurrected in a big way, and plans are already underway for next year! The winner gets to keep his title from 2016; Jeff Whalen won “Best Overall” and the coveted “People’s Choice” with his Smoked Salmon Rangoon. Bobby Farris from AWA won the “Best Presentation” with his “Fishcat Salmon Poke”; Angel Bond won “Chefs’ Choice” with her Baked Chipotle Salmon Sushi Cups, and “Easiest to Make” went to Mike Sleza for his “Smoked Salmon”.
Our judges did a great job with the illustrious panel of Mona Painter, Cecilia Pearson, Gyda Sears (lead judge), Nick Vanderhoff & Mike Harpe. So many community members contributed delicious side dishes and desserts, and Rachel Mundy tended bar while Carolyn Knapper of Lakeview Outfitters graciously took tickets with a smile!
There are so many who volunteered and donated to this event, but a special shout-out to Princess Lodge for gift cert. awards, donations & trays, 2 Brothers for a gift cert. award, Salmon Run, Kenai Cache and Drifters for providing salmon to our chefs; Gwins for chairs, a desert and an award, Joe Arnone for donating the best sourdough bread for each winner, Gary Echer for donating the “Gotta Love a Good Pole Dance” plaque award, John Almanrode of Peak Creativity for graphic design, 3 Bears for Plates and Bike Cooper Landing, Ted Cocos and Lorraine for sponsoring the perfect music provided by Ayden See who rallied at the last minute when Jim Maloney had to cancel…please come back!
The committee, headed up by Lorraine Temple, worked hard to pull it off this year after the last-minute cancellation due to the fire roaring back to life in 2019. Thank you Kristen Helgren, Kim Scott, Ann Hanson, Theresa Norris, and Kathy Lessard, for a job very well done!
Lastly, the good energy, and bad-dad salmon jokes that completed a fantastic evening goes to Tracy Smith and Dan Michels for being the Masters of Ceremonies…Thank you so much! The real winner is the Cooper Landing Community Club that netted over $2,600, and of course, the community itself that had a joyful evening of getting together to celebrate what makes Cooper Landing so special~SALMON!
