Public hearing on Unit 7 federal subsistence caribou harvest to be held Oct. 7
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Sep. 24, 2025 – The Chugach National Forest will hold a public meeting and hearing to share information and solicit comments on the fall 2025 federal subsistence caribou hunt in Game Management Unit 7. The meeting and hearing will be held telephonically on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, at 5 p.m. The public will have the opportunity to share information, interact with state and federal managers, and offer testimony.
A steep decline in the Kenai Mountains caribou herd population has been observed through aerial surveys conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Accordingly, ADF&G restricted the harvest of caribou in the DC001 drawing hunt to caribou bulls only.
The Federal Subsistence Board delegated authority to the Chugach National Forest’s Seward District Ranger to manage the Unit 7 caribou hunt for the 2025 season.
The Kenai Mountains caribou herd has been declining since its last peak of 375 animals in 2001. This decline intensified between 2020 and 2022. The most recent minimum count of the Kenai Mountains herd was 55 animals. Factors driving the decline in the herd are likely related to natural population dynamics, winter conditions, and limited winter range.
To address this conservation concern while maintaining the greatest sustainable opportunity for subsistence harvest, the federal hunt was closed to the harvest of cows on Aug. 16, 2025. Presently, this action is in effect and expires Oct. 14, 2025. The hearing to be held on Oct. 7 is to solicit public input on extending the closure through the end of the 2025 season on Dec. 31.
Following analysis, the Chugach NF intends to extend, under delegation of authority, the restriction to harvest bulls only in the federal subsistence registration hunt for caribou for the remainder of the fall 2025 harvest season in Unit 7.
