PSA: Cooper Landing Has Recycling — And It Needs Our Help
For many years, a small but mighty group of volunteers, led by the late, great Roger Elkins, has quietly collected, sorted, and transported our community’s recycling from the Community Hall.
Every day, “Walkin’ Roger” would make his way to the recycling center to sort through what had been dropped off. He spent countless hours—years of his life—sorting, cleaning, and coordinating the transport of recyclables to Soldotna and Seward. He even worked tirelessly to find new recycling options when traditional outlets weren’t available.
Why? Because Roger cared, and his fellow volunteers continue to care. Roger cared about our community, our environment, and the idea that even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference.
Now Roger is happily catching 30-inchers on the river, and he can no longer be the keystone that keeps our recycling center running. It’s up to the rest of us to carry that mission forward.
Today, the glass bin tipped over, and while cleaning it up, I got a firsthand look at just how much garbage and extra sorting Roger had been dealing with all these years.
There are signs on every bin explaining what belongs inside. Please take a moment to read them and sort your recycling correctly when you make a deposit. It only takes a minute, but it saves volunteers hours of extra work.
If you’d like to help in other ways, here are a couple of opportunities:
1. Help Sort Recycling
Stop by the recycling shed and sort bins into the appropriate bags for transport. Bags are available inside the shed. Please wear gloves for safety.
2. Help Transport Recycling
If you’re already making a trip to Soldotna or Seward and have a little extra room in your vehicle, consider taking a bag or two to the recycling center. If you have questions about where to drop them off, contact the Cooper Landing Community Club at officers@cooperlandingcommunityclub.com.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. With a little help from our community, we can keep Roger’s mission alive and well—and that’s something that would definitely make him smile.
Cheers!
