Chugach National Forest to host federal subsistence hunt permitting events
Moose Pass, AK – June 22, 2026 – The Chugach National Forest will host several events in late July on the Eastern Kenai Peninsula to issue federal subsistence hunting permits for Unit 7. Unit 7 Federal Subsistence hunting permits are only available for federally qualified rural residents of Cooper Landing, Hope and Moose Pass.
To qualify, individuals must have lived in Alaska for the past 12 months with a primary residence in Cooper Landing, Moose Pass, or Hope. Individuals with seasonal residences in any of these communities do not qualify as rural residents. Individuals who claim residence in another location for any purpose are not eligible to receive a permit.
Permitting events will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:

Hope | Bear Creek Lodge | Tuesday, July 21, 2026
Moose Pass | Moose Pass Sportsman’s Club | Wednesday, July 22, 2026
Hunters will need to bring several items to verify their eligibility, including their State of Alaska hunting license, State of Alaska driver’s license, and verification of primary physical address, if not listed on the driver’s license. Acceptable forms of address verification include State of Alaska voter registration, a lease or rental agreement, tax documents, utility bill, or an address listed on a State of Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application.
Individuals who are unable to attend these meetings will be able to receive permits at the Seward Ranger Station located south of Moose Pass by appointment only. Please call 907.288.3178 to schedule.

Do you or someone you know require access to specialized healthcare services but face challenges in traveling to centers like Anchorage or even Seattle due to financial constraints or transportation limitations? A new organization, Angel Flight, has emerged to address these pressing concerns.
With over four decades of experience, Angel Flight has been dedicated to assisting patients in the lower 48 states. They have established a unique partnership with volunteer pilots, connecting them with patients who need to travel to medical facilities at no cost to the patients themselves. Angel Flight West, which now includes Alaska, serves the seven westernmost states.
The Alaska wing of Angel Flight West has recently been established, and I have been honored to be appointed as the wing leader for the state. To date, we have successfully recruited over a dozen pilots who have generously volunteered their planes and fuel to facilitate patient transfers from the Peninsula to Anchorage without any financial burden.
Here’s how the process works: If you or someone you know is in need of transportation to Anchorage or Seattle, you can reach out to Angel Flight West. Whether it’s a local pilot who will fly you to Anchorage at no cost or a connection with Alaska Airlines, Angel Flight West will arrange for the necessary transportation. We have partnered with Alaska Airlines to transport patients from Anchorage to Seattle at no cost.

Russian River & Upper Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Bag Limits Increased
(Soldotna) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is announcing an increase to the sockeye salmon bag limit to six fish per day and twelve in possession for the Russian River and a section of the mainstem Kenai River. This regulatory change is effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, June 25 through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
The section of the mainstem Upper Kenai River includes the area that extends from Skilak Lake upstream to ADF&G regulatory markers located approximately 300 yards upstream of the public boat launch at Sportsman’s Landing (this includes the Russian River Sanctuary Area) and the Russian River from its mouth upstream to an ADF&G marker located approximately 600 yards downstream from the Russian River Falls.
As of June 22, 2026, 22,375 sockeye salmon have passed the Russian River weir. The lower bound of the early-run Russian River sockeye salmon biological escapement goal (BEG) of 22,000 – 42,000 sockeye salmon has been exceeded and projections indicate the upper bound of the escapement goal will be exceeded.
“Fish passage at the weir has been strong and is projected to exceed the escapement goal” stated Cook Inlet Management Coordinator Patrick Fowler. “Given the strength of the run, it is appropriate to increase bag and possession limits, providing additional harvest opportunity.”
Anglers are reminded to remove fish carcasses whole or gutted/gilled from the Russian River clear water. If you clean your catch, take fish to the mainstem Kenai River cleaning tables located at the confluence and ferry crossing to fillet and chop-up sockeye salmon carcasses into small pieces and throw the pieces into deep, flowing waters. Please respect habitat and cultural resource protection sites that are fenced or roped off, stay on the established trails and boardwalks, and use public restroom facilities in the campgrounds and ferry areas. Please keep all personal belongings, including stringers of fish closely attended.
