We sent out a letter in December 2025 (CLCC Letter to Community) to update everyone on activities, events and items happening at the Hall for the Club over the past year. In memory of Mike Stevens, of Just Bears Court, Cooper Landing.
Mike beat cancer once.
Then twice.
Then, just to be clear,
he took it down with him.
A final, gentlemanly checkmate,
delivered with fury.
A fisherman to all, an angler in his own telling,
the Kenai River knew Mike better than most.
It knew his impatience,
his stubborn optimism,
his reverence for beauty and bounty,
his devotion to life and the people who made it worth living.
Mike adventured best beside his wife,
the architect of his corrected paths,
the quiet keeper of the fishing tricks
that made him shine.
They did everything together:
traveling, plotting quests,
and conquering cancer.
She kept him grounded;
he tested every limit.
Mike’s happiest hours were spent on the Kenai,
wrestling salmon he’d never eat,
proving once again
it was never about the prize,
it was always about the story.
And stories, oh, Mike told the tallest of them all.
He could stretch history,
inflate a fish,
and spin a tale so high
it needed oxygen.
He spoke of his kids and grandkids
the way proud hearts do,
to anyone within range,
and several people who weren’t.
Of all the roles he played –
Dad. Pop. Brother. Grandpa. Son. Uncle. Pal. Hero of the Tall Tale –
his favorite might have been cowboy.
Wild West pistols cracking the air,
semi-rapid, fully committed,
grinning like a man who knew
exactly how alive he was.
And when the final moment came,
he did not whimper in defeat.
With Elton John playing in the background,
family whispering love, gratitude, and encouragement,
ten o’clock struck
and Mike landed the last punch.
Not gently,
but definitively.
Cancer lost.
Mike won.
Again.
As my wise child said it best:
Grandpa Mike will be remembered.
So we’ll remember…
the pranks, the absurdities,
the legends that grew larger
every time they were told,
and a man who left the world
better fabled than he found it.
And somewhere in eternity, surely,
Mike is wearing that familiar grin,
already halfway through
his next great story.
Because cancer didn’t take Mike.
Mike took cancer
and left us stories big enough
to last the rest of our days.

2026 Kenai Peninsula Parks Recruits for Citizen Advisory Boards
(Soldotna, AK) –– The Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation is currently inviting Alaskans to apply for positions on three Citizen Advisory Boards on the Kenai Peninsula—Seward, Kenai River Special Management Area, and Kachemak Bay.
“Citizen Advisory Boards play an important role in assisting Alaska State Parks with management direction and provide the public with an opportunity to influence parks across the region,” said Hans Rinke, Superintendent of Kenai Prince William Sound Region.
Alaskans interested in applying for one of the Citizen Advisory Board seats can apply online or contact the Kenai Prince William Sound Regional Headquarters at Morgan’s Landing (907-262-5581).
