East Cook Inlet Sport and Personal Use Razor Clam Fisheries Will Remain Closed for 2026
(Homer) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game conducted razor clam abundance surveys at both Ninilchik and Clam Gulch beaches in April and May 2026. Preliminary results have found the abundance of adult (≥80mm) clams to be at historical lows and below the threshold required to open the fishery in both areas. Therefore, the sport and personal use razor clam fisheries in east Cook Inlet will remain closed through the remainder of 2026 and at least until abundance is assessed in the spring of 2027.
In the Ninilchik area, razor clam abundance was assessed at the south beach and the adult abundance was approximately 31,000 clams, which is 87% below the abundance threshold to open the limited fishery in the Ninilchik area. In the Clam Gulch area, razor clam abundance was assessed at the north beach and the adult abundance was approximately 45,000 clams, which is the lowest observed adult abundance for this location and is 95% below the fishery threshold. Additionally, the abundance of juvenile clams at both locations was also well below average. These results suggest high rates of natural mortality and poor recruitment of new cohorts to these beaches and will likely lead to the fishery remaining closed for several more years. The causes of these conditions remain unknown but likely include effects from habitat changes and predation.
“Razor clam numbers are not improving in east Cook Inlet, despite the fishery closure” said Lower Cook Inlet Area Management Biologist Mike Booz. “The best option for digging razor clams this season will be the Polly Creek and Crescent River Bar beaches in West Cook Inlet.”
For additional information, please contact Area Management Biologist Mike Booz or Assistant Area Management Biologist Holly Dickson at (907) 235-8191.

Want to learn how to play Mah Jongg? Already know how? You’re welcome, too!
Join us for fun while Elizabeth Loewecke teaches you how to play. Tuesdays, June 9, 16, 23 and 30, 1-3pm. Space reserved for four players. The first Tuesday will be instruction, the next three Tuesdays will be guided play and fun!
We will be learning using the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), rules. Their cards for the games can be purchased through their website. I will have four cards we can use for now. I will also supply the tiles, mat, racks, and dice, just bring yourself!
Mah Jongg (also spelled mahjong) translates literally to “sparrow” in Chinese. The name refers to the sound of the tiles being shuffled, which is said to resemble the chattering of sparrows. Sparrows also historically feature on the “Bamboo 1” tile.
Game Background
The Basics: It is a game of strategy, skill, and luck typically played with four players using a set of 136 or 144 tiles adorned with Chinese characters and symbols.
Winning Call: Declaring “Mahjong!” is how a player announces they have successfully matched their tiles into a winning configuration.
History: Originating in 19th-century China, the name “Mah-Jongg” was trademarked in the 1920s by an American who helped popularize it globally.
What can you do to prepare?
There are some great online tutorials. Just do an internet search. Southern Sparrow is a YouTuber with great teaching skills. https://mahjong4friends.com is a free practice site.
This is NOT the matching tile game we have all enjoyed on our phones.
I started playing to keep my cognition sharp as I age and I have noted an improvement! I have also noted improved attention and alertness. This is a fun, social game, so come learn!
