Kenai River Personal Use Dip Net Fishery Open 24 Hours Per Day
(Soldotna) – The Kenai River personal use dip net fishery will be open 24 hours per day, beginning 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 28 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026.
As of July 26, the total run projection for Kenai River sockeye salmon is 3 million. In accordance with The Upper Cook Inlet Personal Use Salmon Fishery Management Plan the hours open to dipnetting in the Kenai River personal use fishery may be extended to 24 hours per day if ADF&G determines the abundance of late-run Kenai River sockeye salmon exceeds 2.3 million fish.
A 2026 Upper Cook Inlet Personal Use permit and a resident sport fishing license are required and must be on your person while dipnetting. Only Alaska residents may participate in this fishery. Dipnet permits are available at local ADF&G offices, the ADF&G online store, and at participating vendors. Only one Upper Cook Inlet Personal Use permit is allowed per household. Participants are reminded that retention of king salmon is prohibited, and any king salmon caught must be returned to the water immediately.
Please respect all private property adjacent to public beaches and follow applicable rules and regulations when on lands owned by the City of Kenai.
For additional information, please contact the Soldotna Fish and Game office at (907) 262-3968.

Proposals Sought for the 2027 Kenai Peninsula Habitat Rehabilitation & Protection Cost-Share Program
(Soldotna) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Sport Fish is currently accepting proposals for the 2027 Kenai Peninsula Habitat Rehabilitation & Protection Cost-Share Program. The submission deadline is 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The Kenai Peninsula Habitat Rehabilitation & Protection Cost-Share Program, administered cooperatively by ADF&G and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), offers financial incentives and educational outreach to private landowners and public land managers. The program provides technical expertise on streambank rehabilitation, state and federal permitting assistance, and funding for salmon habitat rehabilitation and protection projects along streambanks on the Kenai Peninsula. Funds are limited and not all projects can be funded; however, selected landowners could have up to 50% of the cost of their project reimbursed. Additionally, ADF&G staff provide educational opportunities for landowners, public land managers, and the public to learn about streambank rehabilitation techniques and the value of fish habitat. The program uses proven bioengineering techniques, including coir logs, willow plantings, cabled spruce trees, rootwads, and elevated light penetrating walkways, to help stabilize, revegetate, and rehabilitate streambanks.
“Summer is here and the salmon have returned to the rivers, and landowners are inviting friends and family to fish from their property to fill their freezers full of salmon. Now is the time that they start to notice erosional issues along their bank,” Habitat Biologist Jessica Johnson, said. “Landowners who participate in the program will learn the importance of healthy streambanks and they will be doing their part to support and maintain healthy juvenile salmon habitat and populations.”
For additional information, contact Streambank Rehabilitation Coordinator Jessica Johnson at (907) 267-2403 or by email at DFG.DSF.StreambankRehab@alaska.gov. Additional information is also available on the ADF&G Cost-Share Program website.
