Thank You for Helping Us Reduce Wildfire Hazards in Alaska!
Hello Cooper Landing and Moose Pass! Thank you for being so proactive and reaching out for information regarding fuels reduction opportunities through the Division of Forestry. In just 24 hours, we have heard from enough landowners to likely use the last of our grant funding. We want to let this community know that folks reaching out for information about hazardous fuel reduction grants after 2/22/24 will likely be placed on a waitlist. Feel free to reach out for information about your forest or information about reducing fire risks on your property–hearing from you all helps us understand just how many Alaskan’s are in need of these kinds of services.

Chili Cook-off, This Tuesday!!
Bring your best chili, and let the judges decide! Prizes will be awarded!! And if chili is not your thing, come anyways and bring a dish of your choice to share if you can. The goal is simple: community-wide socializing over a meal. We can’t wait to see you there!
RV Host at Community Hall
The Cooper Landing Community Club is looking for an individual or couple to be at the Community Hall RV spot beginning in May in a host position. Host duties include:
- Daily opening of the driveway gate by 8:00 a.m. and closing the gate by 10:00 p.m. (later if necessary due to activity at hall. There is no overnight camping for the public or hall users allowed without prior consent from CLCC Board)
- Remove trash weekly or as needed and pick up trash in the area as needed.
- Water flowers and plants weekly.
- Weed whack around all buildings, RV spots, outhouse, and covered pavilion as needed.
- Pick up limbs and debris from wind as needed.
- Enforce general hall rules and no overnight camping rule.
- Stock toilet paper and take out trash in the outhouse as needed.
- Contact board members if anything needs fixed or cared for.
- Meet users at the hall to give keys and do hall walk-through and do hall checkout with groups as needed.
Host must have their own RV. Water hookup, sewer and electricity included. Duties are performed in lieu of rent. If you are interested please email officers@cooperlandingcommunityclub.com with your name, contact info and potential available start date.

Patrick James Shea, 75
Heaven welcomed another good man, Patrick James Shea, on December 27, 2023. Born in Seward, Alaska he lead an adventurous life around fishing (commercial and sport), hunting, and operating things with a motor. After graduating from Seward High School he signed up for the Alaska Army National Guard where he spent several weeks in California for Boot Camp. After about 7 years of service he departed the 297th Calvary with an Honorable Discharge that he was very proud of and enjoyed his time playing G.I. Joe with practicing ops and carrying out missions. He worked for Marathon Fuel and then for the State of Alaska as a heavy equipment operator for 21 years and was able to retire at 55. He usually had something new to drive like a new pickup, snowmachine, 4-wheeler, or motorcycle. He liked to go fast and always had the newest gadget or wear for the occasion. He couldn’t go into a store without buying something even if were only a trinket. He loved to snowmachine with Jimmy Cooper, Don Conrad, Warren Albertson, Mark Clemmons, Ken Follet, Mike and Dennis Jones and more. He was a heck of a rider and liked to go places people hadn’t gone to before.
When he went through his Harley stage, he rode every chance he could with his brother Tim or friends like Jerry and Cheryl James. He even embarked on a journey from Alaska to Cape Cod and back riding through Canada with his good friends Benton Groom and Ernie Ostler. Over the years he put on over 100,000 Harley Road Miles. After retirement he worked for Wildman’s in Cooper Landing for about 13 summers as a driver which he didn’t mind since he loved to drive! He would spend the winters in Oregon with his daughter, Ruby. Years later, he decided to go further south to Arizona where he later bought land and built a house.
Pat was a funny, laid back, story-telling, war and western movie watching, animal loving, coffee drinking, deal shopping, wrench turning, biscuits and gravy eating, nap taking, happy guy. He had never met a stranger with being able to strike up a conversation with just about anyone, anywhere. He had many sayings like “Punch it, I know the road” and “If a guy had…” He was a walking toolbox with likely having a tool you needed in the top pocket of his overalls that he always wore. With the added pocket of change, they must have weighed 5 lbs. Pat lived a full life with having traveled and experienced most of Alaska as well as a lot of the lower 48 including countless trips up and down the Alcan Hwy.
Pat’s sister Pam Grunert passed before him along with his travel companion and beloved dog, Hallie. He is survived by his brothers Dale and Tim as well as his daughter Ruby. He passed away unexpectedly in Arizona.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 15 at the Branson Pavilion in Seward from 2-5pm. There will be cake (chocolate and carrot, his favorites) and possibly more. If you would like to bring something, please do. Also, bring your pictures and stories if you have any to share.

Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are held at the Baptist Church annex Saturday mornings 9:00 and Wednesday nights 7:00. This is an open 12 step meeting.
