Donations for Western Alaska
I am sure you have heard by now about the destruction from the typhoon last weekend. We had a lot of flooding in Bethel and some damage, but nothing like the damage that happened in some of the villages. A lot of people have and will continue to evacuate to Bethel in the coming days. The easiest way to help is probably to make a monetary donation to the relief fund at Alaska Community Foundation. You can also keep an eye on KYUK for updates. That is the best place for information at this time. In my spare time I also volunteer with Bethel Friends of Canines, and we have a ton of rescue dogs coming in from Kwig in the next couple of days (30-50 dogs), and if you are a dog lover, keeping an eye on the various rescues on the road system to help with fostering is another way to help. Even if you foster a dog unrelated to the typhoon, it frees up space for more dogs if there are more fosters.
That is the update for now. I have no idea if this storm is getting the press coverage it deserves- people are comparing the damage to Hurricane Katrina. Help spreading the word outside of Alaska to drum up more awareness and donations is also helpful.
