Unit 7 Caribou Registration Hunt restricted to harvest of bulls only, Aug. 16
MOOSE PASS, Alaska – Aug. 15, 2025 – Seward District Ranger Ruth D’Amico, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is restricting the Unit 7 federal subsistence caribou registration hunt to the harvest of caribou bulls only. The restriction will be effective from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, to 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, unless rescinded by a subsequent federal special action.
Based on aerial surveys conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Kenai Mountains Caribou Herd has suffered a significant decline in population. The State drawing hunt has also been restricted to caribou bulls only. Whether this action is extending through the end of the season, Dec. 31, 2025, is contingent on a public hearing to be held at a later date.
A map and description of the closed areas are available from the Seward Ranger District Office. For additional information, contact Ruth D’Amico at 907-288-7730 or ruth.damico@usda.gov, or Andrew Sanders at 907-250-0439 or andrew.sanders@usda.gov.
Information on the Federal Subsistence Management Program can be found at https://www.doi.gov/subsistence.
