to meet in Anchorage at the BLM Campbell Creek Science Center
The Southcentral Alaska Subsistence Regional Advisory Council will meet October 10 – 11, 2024, in Anchorage at the Campbell Creek Science Center. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. daily.
The Council will develop recommendations on proposals to change Federal subsistence fish, shellfish, and wildlife regulations and discuss other issues related to subsistence in the Eastern Interior Region.

Notice of CLES Board of Directors Election
The CLES Board of Directors election will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at the Cooper Landing Community Hall. Voting will take place from 330-530 PM followed by the Annual Corporate Membership Meeting at CLES where results will be announced and the Board of Directors meeting will be held.
Corporate membership is required to vote in this election and also to run for one of the two open seats. Feel free to call CLES (907)595-1800 or Katie Feichtinger (907)599-0313 to verify your corporate membership status or fill out the following applications.

Sunrise Happenings
The Sunrise Inn Bar will be closed on Thursday September 26th after 7:30 pm for a private party for QAP. We really appreciate all of the business they have given us this year and want to honor their request. The bar will be open to the public from 5 to 7 pm. As always, you are welcome to have a drink in the cafe with or without a meal.

We are also adjusting our hours. We will now open at 8:30 am Monday thru Friday. Saturday and Sunday we will remain opening at 8 am.
On Sunday thru Wednesday, we will be closing the kitchen at 8. pm. Thursday thru Saturday the kitchen will close at 8:30pm. If you are running behind or need food later, please call us and we will try to accommodate you.

Library Fundraising Efforts
Our library recently found out that Alaska’s Public Library Assistance grant was cut 74%, after we had received a $5,000 to $7,000 grant every year since our library opened in 1983. Thankfully, there was a huge outcry across the state. It appears that the grant will be reinstated mid-October. Yay!
We are required to provide a community match for the grant. We have a yearly budget of approximately $14,000, so community donations are essential. Last year we did not quite make the $7,000 match. (The value of volunteer labor can be used as a match, if necessary, though that doesn’t pay the bills.) This year, after our plea to the community for help, we have surpassed the $7,000 goal. Thank you so much for supporting your local library! We have also applied for several grants and are feeling much better about the library finances for this fiscal year.
Our library provides invaluable services to the community. In addition to book and movie checkouts, we provide an online catalog, access to the Alaska Digital Library, internet, and up-to-date computers, printers, and fax for public use.
How you can help our library:
- Email eed.library.grants@alaska.gov with comments about the value small volunteer libraries provide to their communities and how much they depend on state support.
- Volunteer! Email Virginia at cooperlandinglibrary@gmail.com if you would like to contribute time. We are always looking for volunteers to work a regular shift, substitute, and/or provide expertise and service in specialized areas, such as accounting or information technology.

Obituary for Larry Lee Smith 1952-2024
Life-long Alaskan Larry Lee Smith (72) of Cooper Landing and Soldotna, Alaska, died September 14, 2024, at Providence Alaska Medical Center after a long battle with congestive heart failure. A simple outdoor burial service, complete with military honors, will be held at the base of the Cooper Landing Cemetery on Bean Creek Road at 1 pm, Saturday, September 28, 2024. In the case of heavy rain, the burial service will be moved to the Cooper Landing Community Club. Following the burial service, a remembrance gathering will occur at the Cooper Landing Community Club on Bean Creek Road from 2 – 4 pm. All who knew and loved Larry are invited to join us in celebrating his life and legacy.

Wood Pile Contest October 6th!
Hey folks! Our annual wood pile contest is coming up on Sunday October 6th. We need entries in order to keep this fun contest going! If you have been hesitant to enter in years past, do it now! Didn’t win? This could be your year! Also, if you have a neighbor who may not know about our contest, nominate them! We will call them to confirm their anonymous entry to make sure they are willing to participate. The winner receives the privilege of displaying the Best Woodpile handmade plaque by our beloved Rabbit for the year and a chainsaw donated by Craig Taylor of Soldotna.
